❤️‍🩹 "Purposefully Imperfect" - my new motto!

The other day I was telling my partner that I'm proud of myself for completing a task (composing an email newsletter 😜) without getting caught up in perfectionism. I let it be imperfect on purpose by not stressing over consistent capitalization, image dimension, or the myriad other details I tend to get hung up on.

He responded, "I love hearing about the times when you are purposefully imperfect!"

Because this is so often the encouragement I need, I decided that this is my new motto!

PURPOSEFULLY IMPERFECT

Doing something "purposefully imperfect" is a great way to get something DONE and to KEEP MAKING PROGRESS. (Not to mention with more peace, ease, joy, and fun!)

Never underestimate the value of making (and releasing) the “minimum viable product.” You will ALWAYS learn ways you can do things better next time. But if you never make the thing -you never learn and never improve.

Sometimes projects can feel so big and so important that they are daunting and overwhelming. But if I remove my need to get it right the first time, if I allow myself to be a little bit messy and make mistakes, I can actually COMPLETE the project (and have a good time doing it!).

Being purposefully imperfect encourages others around you to feel more relaxed and encouraged to be themselves as well. We all feel more comfortable and accepted when we know it’s ok to make mistakes as we learn and grow.

I recently produced a huge in-person stage show that also streamed online to hundreds of people. It would have been an impossible undertaking without the help of all the talented performers and crew members. I am so proud of the dances we shared! I am incredibly grateful for the comradery we all shared as we each put our best efforts forward, knowing that even if we individually made mistakes, collectively we would succeed!

This piece is one of my favorites from the show. I trusted members of The Cohesion Collective to perform my choreography with their own personal touches and even assigned one of the dancers to be the creative director. When I saw them rehearsing in person for the first time I cried! The creative director, Lauren, added such dynamic staging to the choreography that took the message of community support in this dance to a whole new depth!

Warmly,

April Rose 🌹
