🧿 Connections in Community

This past weekend I had the pleasure of sitting down with Faruk Çalışkan, a fellow member of Bereket (The University of Texas Middle Eastern Ensemble) to learn “Erzurum Çarşı Pazar.” Many belly dancers might know this song as “Sari Gelin.”

Something I’m really grateful for in my artistic practice is the opportunity to meet and explore creatively with others! Connecting over music with others in my community has been magical and healing. I’m so honored Faruk joined us to share his knowledge of "Erzurum Çarşı Pazar” with us.

Faruk led a great workshop! He taught us about maqam and the stringed instrument he was playing called the bağlama, as well as shared insight into the different versions of the song and its translations. I am so excited that we got to spend this time with him before he travels back to Turkey!

Watch us sing and play along to “Erzurum Çarşı Pazar:”
